Well just because you don't see the character all the time doesn't mean they aren't doing other things when off screen. Remember this isn't a video or TV show it's a story represented by static screenshots at times so it's not going to show what a given character is doing every second even when they are being focused on. Julia could have seen Sophia out of the corner of her eye at any time. It doesn't strain credulity to think that could have happened.

The creator could have given Dylan plenty of options to do it right from the get go since the parents bathroom door had no lock so he obviously didn't fall into that trope. Also you are given the option of having Dylan not go through with it, so if you don't like it you can choose to ignore it.
