After meeting at the Radio, Television & Film Master’s Degree Program at [[The University of Texas at Austin]] in 2004 and working on several projects together, Ben Steinbauer and Berndt Mader formed The Bear in 2007.
 
The Bear's documentary [[Winnebago Man|''Winnebago Man'']] (2009) premiered at South By Southwest and follows the [[Internet phenomenon]] created by a series of twenty-year-old [[Outtake|outtakes]] from a [[Winnebago Industries|Winnebago]] sales video featuring profane outbursts from a salesperson named Jack Rebney. [[Michael Moore]] called it “One of the funniest documentaries ever made”, and [[Roger Ebert]] named it one of his favorite films of 2010. The film was directed by Steinbauer and was distributed theatrically in the US by Kino Lorber and in Canada by Kinosmith.

In 2020, The Bear was hired by Rough House Pictures to make a documentary about Kid Rock. The documentary followed the musician through the Covid pandemic as he was attempting to release his final album, go on his final tour and build his luxury dream mansion. The film was shelved due to creative differences between Rough House and Live Nation.
